JOB DESCRIPTION:

Classification:  Truck Driver, Over the Road

Principal Function

  1. To drive intercity truck from home terminal to distant point(s) and return.

Duties

  1. Inspect vehicle and required parts and accessories to determine safe operating condition prior to departure on trip.

  2. Check shipping papers to determine nature of load and any special hazards, and when feasible, to check load, itself, and methods of securing it.

  3. Operate vehicle in compliance with company rules and all applicable laws and regulations, and in accordance with accepted principals of safe driving.

  4. Deliver freight to consignees.

  5. Pick up freight from shippers.

  6. Load and unload freight as required.

  7. Collect freight charges as instructed.

  8. Perform other related work as required.

Miscellaneous Responsibilities

  1. Report all accidents involving driver or company equipment.

  2. Report highway safety hazards noted en route.

  3. Maintain trip records as required.

  4. Maintain records required for compliance with State and Federal regulations, including driver's logs, record of fuel purchases, mileage records, etc...

  5. Properly use and care for all equipment assigned to the driver for the performance of his or her duties.

  6. Promptly report any delays due to breakdown, weather or traffic conditions, or other emergency, or in the event of irregularities relating to pickup or delivery of cargo.

Job Restrictions

  1. Weight lifting up to 75 lbs occasionally.

  2. Sitting.  It may be necessary to sit without stopping for 2 - 6 hours dependent upon scheduling.

  3. Running a load late is not acceptable.
